“The Governess Affair” is connected to the same series as this one. “Unlocked” is connected to her earlier series, and it is one of the best romances I’ve ever read.

It was very much a jewel and a pleasant discovery for me. World-building in such close confines is very much an art and I’m now curious to see how she does in the longer form.

Oh, and loved being in Jonas’ head when he and Lydia finally come together. That he saw everything in the correct terms and without euphemisms not only made me smile, but was so perfect for the character.

“Shine” is definitely the word. I’ve got The Duchess Wars, but I think I want to search out any other novellas she’s written because this was most enjoyable.

I’ve read the other novella as well, though I will confess it didn’t grab me quite as much. I think perhaps because the last chapter was such a clear tease for the first book in the series, which spoiled the ending somewhat for me. I thought this worked very well, though, and the first book is now sitting in the digital TBR pile.

Your first paragraph beautifully sums up why I like reading short. When you discover an author who works in the format well, it really is magic – the perfect antidote for when Real Life is totally insane.

Loved, loved this novella – and read it for my challenge as well. Milan has the knack of writing complete stories in very small spaces, and characters that you care about almost immediately. I also love that they have realistic responses to things, and that her research is spot-on.

Courtney Milan is one of the best romance novella-ists writing right now, in my opinion. She really shines in the short form (although I like her longer books, too).

I read the other novella in this series and felt pretty much the same away about it as I do all Courtney Milan’s books – terrific. I’m looking forward to reading this one now that I’ve seen so many positive reviews.
